Chapter Eleven

Amelia sat on the edge of the sofa, listening to Samuel talk to Ruthie about Dorothy. She knew that the woman wanted to see Ruthie. She couldn’t blame her for that. And since Samuel had agreed, they decided the best way to deal with the issue was to invite the woman to dinner.

Neither of them was very excited about extending the invitation, but Dorothy had accepted. Amelia thought it was probably for the best. This way, they could control the environment. Now Samuel needed to prepare Ruthie for the visit.

“I don’t remember her,” Ruthie admitted with a frown.

“You were pretty small the last time you saw her,” Samuel said. He kept his voice light, but Amelia could sense his tension.

Amelia knew that Dorothy had come for the funeral, and had visited another time. The second visit had resulted in her desire to take Ruthie with her.

“Is she staying for a long visit?” Ruthie asked.

“Tonight, she’s just coming for dinner,” Samuel said. “But I’m not sure how long she’ll be in town.”

“Okay,” Ruthie said amiably enough. “Can I pick some flowers for her?”

The question was directed at Amelia. She met Samuel’s gaze. He gave a nod, so she agreed. “You may pick anything you like. The marigolds are in bloom already, as are a few pansies. Would you like me to come to the greenhouse with you?”

“I can do it by myself. I’ll make her the prettiest bouquet,” Ruthie said. She slipped off the couch and trotted to the exit.

The moment the door was closed, Samuel turned to Amelia.

“I suppose that went well,” he said.

“She didn’t seem terribly impressed that Dorothy is her mamm’s sister,” Amelia noted.

“I think at her age that doesn’t have much significance,” Samuel said. “It probably will when she’s older. Now, she barely remembers Martha and doesn’t talk about her much.”

“Dinner is ready,” Mary announced as she came in from the kitchen. “I turned the burners down so we can serve it when Dorothy arrives.”

Amelia and Mary had worked on the meal together, Amelia only stepping aside while Samuel spoke with Ruthie. It felt only right to be there with him, now that she was to be his wife. Wife. The very thought sent an indescribable tremor down her spine.

“How did Ruthie take the news?” Mary asked.

“She took it well,” Samuel said. “She’s outside picking her aunt Dorothy a bouquet. I’m not so sure she’d be picking flowers for the woman if she knew what her plans were.”

The pain in Samuel’s voice caused Amelia’s heart to ache. “Don’t worry about that right now. You know what the Bible says about worry.”

“Jah, don’t worry about tomorrow. Today has enough trouble of its own.” Samuel gave her a grim smile. “It’s today that I’m worried about. I am afraid of where things will go after this dinner. I only hope that Dorothy doesn’t announce her plans to Ruthie. I don’t want to upset my dochter.”

Amelia placed a reassuring hand on his arm. It was the first time she’d reached out to him in such a way, and he looked at her in surprise.
